Tillandsia filifolia is native to Mexico and Costa Rica where it grows at altitudes of 0 to 2,000. The plant's name "Filifolia" means "Thread Leaf" which is fitting due to the long, fine, needle like leaves. These leaves are a bright green with a very dark brown base. This plant develops a long, thin inflorescence spike which produces lilac flowers. T. Filifolia enjoys being grown in a semi-shady area with good airflow and frequent waterings. They should receive bright, indirect sunlight. Indoors, an east or west facing window area is ideal. Outdoors under partially shaded conditions is fine but in the colder states protection from frost is required, so an undercover or indoors area is more appropriate.
